Wildscapes Retreat & Campsite
Meet your Hosts

Wildscapes Retreat is a family-run space, built from a deep desire to live differently.

A few years ago, life looked very different. I was living in New Zealand, chasing a version of life that, from the outside, looked like the dream and definitely once was. But something didn’t feel right anymore – and deep down, I knew I’d outgrown it. When my mum became ill, I decided to come back to the UK. It wasn’t easy to leave that life behind, especially when so many people couldn’t understand why I would walk away from it. But it gave me something far more important – time, perspective, and a reminder of what really matters. I felt really grounded here. After she passed, everything shifted and my priorities changed. I realised I no longer wanted to live on the other side of the world – and meeting Sam made coming home feel right, helping me truly settle back in.

Wildscapes Retreat grew from that place. Not from a business idea – but from a need to create something more real where I could be close to family. We’ve created a space where people can step away from the noise, reconnect with themselves, and experience a simpler, more grounded way of being. This isn’t just somewhere to stay – it’s a reflection of the life we’re choosing to live now.

We’re a small, hands-on family team, and everything here has been shaped and built by us. You won’t find a big operation or a polished resort – just real people, a warm welcome, and a space that’s been created with care.

Campsite

Camping at Wildscapes is all about slowing down, enjoying nature, and finding your own space. We’re not a regimented, line-by-line campsite – you’re welcome to pitch your tent, bring your campervan, or stay in a bell tent wherever feels right. The site has a few different areas, so groups can often have their own space, while still enjoying the atmosphere of the campsite.

Sam

Meet Sam – campsite co-creator, builder, joiner, fence fixer, loo builder… and the man behind a lot of the hard graft that’s gone into making this place what it is.

Sam’s from Dent – a beautiful village just over the hill in the Yorkshire Dales – and when he’s not working on a project, you’ll usually find him chatting to campers, out at the local @thekingshead, or playing football! Sam is a keen mountain biker too – when he gets time!

He’s built the compost loos, done most of the fencing and always has a to-do list that never seems to end. But he takes real pride in shaping the space and keeping it simple, sturdy, and welcoming.

We actually met just up the road at a festival – a stone’s throw from here – and the rest is history.

He’ll never be the first to jump in front of the camera, but he’s a big part of what makes this place work.

Dad (AKA THE BOSS)

Dad’s played a big part in shaping what the campsite has become – helping with tractor work, pitching in after busy weekends, and always offering his guidance (whether we ask for it or not!).

He knows the land inside out and has a real eye for how things should be done. Between tractor runs, log deliveries and general tootling around, he somehow remembers everyone’s vehicle – no matter how busy we are – and always finds time for a friendly chat as he passes by.

He and Sam work brilliantly together on site, and while he’s not always right… he usually is.

Suzi

I’m Suzie, I run the Campsite with Sam and some help from Dad! This is the farm I grew up on, alongside my sisters. I left when I was a teen and returned in my 30s. From 2009 to 2014, I ran a music festival here – then I headed overseas, travelling across Asia and Australia before settling in New Zealand for a few years. These days I see the farm and the Howgills with a new appreciation – I notice the little things I never used to. I’m a yoga teacher and passionate about mental health. I love seeing people come here and instantly feel a sense of calm – whether they’re staying in a van, a tent, or just passing through. One of the best parts of running the site is hearing your camping stories, and watching people enjoy the peace and the dark skies.
